Just aquired 1960 641 fully intending to do complete rebuilt. Got tractor running but has bad miss. Commpression is 90 psi on all but #3 cyl which is 70 psi, and suprisingly has 40 psi oil pressure at idle when warm. When the plug wires are removed off plugs running there is no difference on #1 and #3 cyls. Have replaced plug wires with no improvement. Have spark on both #1 and #3cyls. Questions.. 1) is compression high enough? 2) does anyone think the exhaust/intake manifold may be the cause of the miss? Thanks in advance. Bill

I agree above. Sounds more like wires crossed..These older tractors will start and run with wires crossed. Amazing.....

The compression is too low. Squirt a little oil in the cylinders and check compression again. If it increases the rings are worn out. If it stays the same, you have bad valves. It sounds like the engine might need a ring job before you worry too much about the miss.
The cam bearings have a lot to do with oil pressure since that is the first place oil flows to from the pump. If they are tight the pressure can stay good even though other parts are worn out.
You said 1 and 3 sounded the same, are they both missing out?
Is it possible 1 and 3 wires are crossed?
Did you change plugs?

The 641 doesnt have cam bearings, it runs strait on the block. I dont know what they intended for a major failure. I dont know what the fix is suppose to be, a cam with oversized bearing surfaces or line bore and put in bearings.

Isn`t that the same engine that is in the naa, 700, and with a bigger bore, the 800 and 900? If so, are all of them built without cam bearings?
How about the diesel versions, which use the same block?
