Sounds like the pump has some internal wear. What type of pump is it exactly, and what did you do to rebuild it?

It is the style that has the seperate reservior and the rebuild kit that I installed from the dealer was just a bunch of O rings.

I guess the other question I should have asked is whether it is a 3 or 4 cyl 4000. I will assume it is a later 3 cylinder.

If so, then I would bet that the bearings are worn in the pump. When this happens, the gears are no longer able to stay close to the side walls of the pump body. Therefor, when the oil heats up and gets "thinner", it is easier for oil under pressure to escape past the gear face and go back to the inlet side.

Remove the pump and clamp it lightly in a vice. Grab the drive gear and try rocking it back and forth. If you see noticeable movement, the bearings are worn. Last I checked, you could not buy new bearings anymore, so that pretty much leaves you to finding a different pump. A heavier weight oil might help in the short term, however, it will not be a permanent solution, the pump performance will continue to deteriorate. Also, a heavier weight oil might not pump so well in cold weather.

Your right it is a 70 model 3 cyclinder I'm sure it has some wear in it cause when I bought the tractor it was dry in the reservior and I think my only permanent fix would be to replace it but for now what type of fluid could I use to help out that wouldn't thin down as much?
Thanks alot for your help Bern.I appreciate it.

Since the pump needs to be replaced anyway, maybe you could try a heavier weight engine oil, say 50 wt? That might help some, I doubt you'd hurt anything by doing that. I wouldn't go so far as to use 90wt gear oil though, I think that would be pushing it. This is just my opinion, I have not tried either way. Maybe someone else can share any of their experiences in this area.
