The battery tray on my diesel 4500 tractor is long and narrow. Is there some specific high amp battery that I should be buying or will some substitution be acceptable? The height seems to be a determining factor as the hood won't close with anything taller that 7". thanks for any feedback..... .jeff

I live around New Orleans, and we are lucky enough to have an Exide distribution center here. I just went over there and got the correct battery from them. I may have had the NAPA dealer look up a cross ref number for me, I cant remember.

The Ford dealer had the best deal on a 4DLT for my 4500. It was $118. I found one cheaper, but no warranty like the ford. Make sure to put a piece of rubber or something under the battery to prevent a hole being rubbed in it. That's why I had to buy a new one. The other one was perfect except for the newly rubbed hole and no acid in battery(all in tray and on bell housing).

The BCI group # for your tractor's battery is 4DLT. That information will buy you a battery that physically will fit the tray & hold downs. The CCA rating will vary by manufacturer & battery model, but even the cheapest one you can find will at least work. Auto parts stores such as NAPA can get you this battery, they probably won't have one on the shelf. Don't forget, your local NewHolland dealer DOES stock these batteries.

The battery tray is designed for a specific type (i.e., size) of battery. Your owner's manual should give you a number for it. Most batteries come in standard sizes of which there are about 10 common sizes. There are only a few variations on the type of lead-acid batteries. For example, deep-cycle or marine batteries have a higher amp-hour capability than a standard automotive battery. But the vibration of a car would kill a marine battery relatively quickly, which is why you don't use a marine battery in a car! (In fact, we stopped using marine batteries to power instrumentation in cars about 3 years ago. We use normal maintenance-free OEM batteries now. They last longer.)

I would recommend using the type and size specified for your tractor. If it is unavailable or simply too expensive, you could use a smaller unit, but it may not have the cranking capacity in cold weather (CCA = cold cranking amps). If the battery is not much smaller than the OEM, it should perform O.K.

I have Simplicity 4592 riding lawnmower. It has a huge battery compartment under the seat. So I use a regular Delco Freedom battery (don't remember the number) like you would find in a car. I could probably crank that little dude for about 2-3 hours if I wanted to. Never worry about running the headlights with the engine off, and so forth. I guess the moral of the story is to use the biggest battery that will fit in your vehicle, which usually means the OEM battery.
