My 4000, UK model, Diesel with I beleive CAV pump and One fuel filter is starting pretty hard, especially after it sits a week or so. Once it has started once for the day it wil start okay the rest of the day. It has a little too much white smoke for my liking. I need to find some new sealing washers for the bleeders to stop the leaking I think is occurring. Anything else I need to check out? I'm a gas mechanic, and this diesel stuff is new to me. Thanks for any help!

The thermostart (you should have it) is a great help in cold weather, but I'm not sure if you are talking about cold starting, or a leakdown problem. Do you get white smoke as soon as you start cranking (before it fires up), or does it take a while to start pumping fuel to the injectors?

It has puffs of white smoke out the stack as soon as it cranks. I have LOTS of battery too. What is a Thermostarter? Where may it be? ON my dash all I have besides the gage cluster is a key switch, shutdown cable, and headlight switch. There is also something that looks and acts like a horn button, and a random hole. Why I think it may be a leakdown problem is the puddle of fuel that seems to develop under it (From the filter) and the fact that if one shuts it down and restarts it will restart right away.Even an hour or so later it will restart fine.

You shouldn't have a leakdown problem with that system, but it is possible. The CAV pump is a rotary style, the high pressure lines come off the circumference of the rear of the pump. as opposed to coming off the top of the inline Simms/Minnemec pump also found on Fords. The only bleeder on the pump is towards the rear of the pump. at about 2 o'clock, a 5/16 hex bleed screw. Thermostart is an intake manifold heater using fuel from the return lineset ignited by an electrical heating element. The unit is screwed into the intake on the front, towards the head. It is under the right front corner of the battery tray. The wire going to it should be hot when the ignition switch is moved past 'on' to a point before 'start' when the dash idiot lights go out. Activate it for 30 seconds or so before cranking in cold weather. I can't quite see all the way up to Stephentown from here in Pine Plains, but it sounds like you have an across the board compression problem rather than a fuel problem.

A little white smoke is normal at start up and these old tractors the fuel injectors get worn and burn rich but the tractor can work fine.

Make sure you have a least a 900 CCA battery and good coonections/wires! Diesel's have a HIGH compression of around 550 psi so a GOOD battery is very important. By old 841 D starts up in sub freezing weather with NO glow plugs ..not hooked up and have never use either! But I have a high capacity battery rated for Diesel's!
