I just became the proud owner of my uncle's Fordson. It is a 1937 English made. I am a Fordson rookie and need some advice from the Fordgods! I have spark and fuel so I was going to pull start it, that is where things started to differ from my Farmalls! Is the clutch a brake and clutch combination? It seems when it is depressed all the way down it acts as a brake, but to get the clutch to work it has to be pushed all the way down, maybe they can't be pull started, I quit until I got some advice before I brke something. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, Thank You!

Andy: Your Model N will be equipped with a transmission brake, which is all the way down on the clutch pedal. The Fordson all-around in 1937 was I believe the first Fordson to have separate brake pedals. Your Fordson is a worm drive, you cannot pull it to start it. If you have a flat belt pulley on the right hand side... you can belt her up to another tractor if you have one with a flat belt pulley. Be sure you have the belt turned so you crank the engine in a clockwise rotation. This is actually the safest way to start a Fordson for the first time. If you use the crank.. be sure you keep your thumb on the same side of the crank as your fingers... pull up from the 9 o'clock position in quarter turns. Don't try to spin the engine. Be sure to retard the spark with the spark lever.

You might want to list your questions on the Fordson page... more responses from Fordson specialists there. :-)

Thank you for the advice, when I retard the spark where should I put that devil, it looks to have a range from 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock with a marking at 11, I figured that was where the start was. There is only one pedal on it, on the right side. I noticed when I came to look for this message a Fordson group,(Rookie Mistake)!

Thanks!!!!! !!!!! !!!!!

Andy,

when your tractor spark lever is down, the spark is 'ADVANCED'. When the lever is moved upward toward the mark or indentation, the spark is fully retarded. I usually start the tractor with the spark lever just about a quarter inch shy of fully retarded. If you move the lever upward beyond the mark or indentation... the primary circuit of the magneto is grounded and ignition is stopped, to stop the engine.

Thank You Don, I found a belt that should be in good enough shape to belt it up to my H tomorrow and see if the old girl will fire! I have been mainly a Farmall guy up to this point, so this is a new venture. My uncle had this Fordson out to Rollag, which is our local show so I spent a couple of hours scraping mud off of her and she cleaned up pretty good. You probably have been there but Rollag has a pretty neat web page if your interested. rollag.com
