Just bought a '71 2000 3 cyl. diesel. The tach/proof meter isn't working. Discovered the engine end of the cable disconnected. Attached to end of cable is an aluminum right angle coupling. Cannot find to which part of engine this connects.

Also, how does the cold starting aid work?

Thanks to everyone for the info. & guidance. Indeed, it appears the generator had been changed.

Since I'm sort of a nut about having things work as they were intended, does anyone know where I could find the correct generator which will accept the tach cable.

I would really recommend sticking with the alternator, it is WAY more reliable. If you feel you must have a generator, your local New Holland dealer should be able to help. While you're there, ask them about a Tisco alternator conversion kit. It is a Delco alternator kit modified on the back for a tach drive. It will cost you twice as much as the generator, but it will be worth it. Trust me on that one.

I have the same problem also with the tach-drive because a previous owner changed the generator to an alternator, the only sollution is to buy an elctronic tach-hourmeter, but you will need a W-connection on your alternator. If you don't have a W-connection it's really easy to get one. The only thing you have to do is to connect a cable from the alternator coil before the rectifier. I think I can get you a drawing of that if you need one.

You may be able to hear if the heat-starter is working. On my 5000 can I hear a slight bubbling noise from the fuel-tank after I have activated the heat-start for about 15 sec.

The tach drive was taken off the back of the generator on those models. If someone converted it to an alternator at one time (a wise move), then you are pretty much left with no other place to attach the drive.

The cold start is a heater element in the front of the intake manifold with a fuel line and wire attached to it. First verify that it is there. Then, take a 12 volt test light and probe on the terminal at the plug, and see what key switch position lights up your test light. I say that because many of them are mis-wired at the key switch. It should normally only be energized at a spring loaded key position just before the start position, and also during cranking.

To use cold start, energize the unit with the key switch for about 15-20 seconds before cranking. Should make a noticeable difference in starting ease.

Jim The cable on my 3000 attaches to the back of the alternator I believe yours should also. Unless
a previous owner changed the alternator.
