On my '71 2000 diesel, is there a seperate sheet metal piece which fits around the area where the steering gear is (under the aft end of the fuel tank)? There are some brackets around that area which have clips on them to accept screws...

If there is a piece which goes there, does anyone know of a source where I could find a replacement?

Also, I need a used power steering actuator cylinder assembly for the 2000. Prices for new ones are astronomical...

Maybe this tinwork is a "collectable" now...
I'll check eBay.

Hey Jim my 68 3400 has the same brackets and clips with the sheet metal missing also.I believe that there is some type of sheetmetal that goes there.I've seen pictures probably in the photos section. Makes me wonder how many old barns are out there with these pieces kicking around and some old farmer saying "I know that I saved these things for a reason but I can't for the life of me
remember where the heck they go,maybe someday it'l come to me".I'm willing to bet that the first time these panels came off they probably stayed off. I dont see many tractors that still have them. How bout it guys know of any old barns that have a set of these getting kicked around.

I got some NEW ones (unpainted) from my FNH dealer several years ago. No, I don't remember how much they were - got CRS!

Got parts book out, looks like there are FOUR pieces of sheet metal that go around the shafts for the steering gear arms. Two large ones at rear going up to the instrument cowel. (C5NN16N561B on left & D2NN16N558D on right) And two smaller ones to the front. (D5NN3N785A on left & C5NN16N557A on right) All numbers are for 2000/3000 wo/SOS. The 4000 and 3500 only have the rear panels - different than those on 2000/3000.

Chesk those part nos. AT your dealer - I am prone to make typos!! :-)

I can't remember seeing a thousand series with those panels on. They really serve no purpose except to make hiding places for mice! :-)

Now that I think about it, I probably got those panels a long time ago when I was "fixing up" my 3000. It now has become my work horse. I've torn off both lights bush hogging, and inflicted several other "battle scars". It is dirty all over, etc. so those panels may never get put on. I need and old nag draft horse not a thoroughbred riding horse. :-)

Larry,

Thanks for your effort in researching #'s. I'll check w/ the local FNH to see if they still stock them.

I've just bought this '71 2000 diesel and am in the process of correcting fudged repairs, mis-wired cold start aid, one rear tire filled w/ calcium chloride (leaking from stem), tach/proof not working due to an incorrect generator, steering column upper oil seal leaking. Well, generally all the usual projects which come with a used treasure. You know the drill.

That being said, I have been looking for exactly this model for a number of years. I found this one located within an hour of here, so I jumped. The only tests I did before handing over the check were: cold starting engine with air temp at 34F and load testing the hydraulic lift system. Those are the BIG money areas. Engine fired up eagerly and hydraulics were fine.

So here I am now, looking for obscure pieces of sheet metal.

Jim.
