Is it possible to put a gas crank in a diesel block? Are the cranks different? I'm trying to buy an 801 ford diesel. someone told me that the crank went out and the owner could not find a diesel crank so they put a gas crank in and got rid of the tractor. Would this be a problem?

Thanks,
Bill

Yes, it would be a problem. The diesel crank is a lot heavier and is forged steel. On the 01 series there is also a gear machined on the diesel crank to operate the balancer that was incorporated into that engine. The gas crank is cast iron. I don`t think one would last very long in a diesel. I have been told that a diesel crank will work in a gas engine, but haven`t tried it.
I have a diesel crank that I might trade for a gas crank, as I haven`t yet made up my mind about using a diesel in one of the tractors I am rebuilding.

Snitkawl , I will be interested in that Diesel Crank if Bill is not , and you decide to swap for a gas crank , I prefer Diesels to gas for the amount of use I have for them , the gas gets expensive after a while. Thanks Tony Jacobs P.S. Where do you live ? I am from Mass. 1-413-267-5087
