How significant is a cracked exhaust manifold as to the smoothness in which a trator runs. Tractor currently runs rough (RPM's jump up suddenly or bogs down suddenly? I have read on the forum of how to check for intake manifold leaks and intend to do that this weekend. Is a cracked exhaust manifold a good indication of overall condition of intake/exhaust manifold assembly including gaskets? Carb has been disassembled (due to stuck float and leaking gas), checked, cleaned and reinstalled. Appears as though previous owner rebuilt it. It was clean, all jets and holes open and no corrosion. Set idle and main jet to recommended settings and turned in and out but tractor still cuts out or revs up sporadically. I mean I pull the throttle back setting still and it hesitates. How do I know if the govenor is playing tricks on the throttle. Can a front mounted loader pump sporadically affect the govenor? I intend to get this tractor starting and running smooth, eventually one part at a time. By the way anybody know the last serial number of the 1962 801's before the production of the 4000. I have a high serial number and am just plain curious. Thanks to all!

It appears that 1962 tractors started off with the serial # 155531. Don't know how many they produced that year.

Cracked exhaust manifold is tough on exhaust valves and doesn't make for a smooth running engine, I'd replace it or braze it. There used to be aftermarket exhaust manifolds available and Ford offered at least two versions, vertical stack and under tractor muffler style.
