Using my 76 3600 to backfill my new drainage field I needed to climb a steep bank, as I started to raise the loader arms the pump pickup loses contact with the fluid in the differental sump. My question is can I overfill the sump for a few hours while I complete the task, without causing any damage. Thanks Roy

If the rear axle oil level is correct right now, then if you are in fact uncovering the pump inlet due to your incline, I'd be worried about the engine oil pressure. I sure hope you are keeping an eye on that warning light. You must be on an extreme slant to cavitate the rear hydraulic pump. Are you sure that you are using the correct rear axle oil level plug to check that rear end? You're not checking the rear axle oil level with the trans dipstick, are you? The trans and rear end are two different sumps. I'd have to think that you are either checking the rear at the trans, or you're using the wrong check plug in the rear. The rear axle oil level in normally pretty high in those things.

To answer your question, you're not going to hurt anything to overfill the rear until you get done with this job.

Thanks Bern for the prompt reply. I am checking the rear axle through the small sight plug on the RHS just below the hydraulic line. I run out of fluid with the bucket rolled and raised about 1/2 travel. I also am using a counter weight so the three ph arms are raised. No signs of oil starvation, at least no flickering warning light. Thanks once again, Roy

"Small sight plug" Hmmmm.... There really is no sight plug on this thing. The check plug should be a 1/4" pipe plug about half way up the center housing about where your heel would be on the RH side, above the RH step plate. If indeed it is up to that level, I can not imagine you getting yourself on an incline steep enough to actually starve that pump.
