I'm looking for a head for my 1964 4000--172 cu in 4-cyl gas burner. the C T farm and country catalog list a head for 7/16" studs or 1/2" studs. What's the difference?

Steve

From your message sounds like you need to know which head to order. If it were me I would pull A nut off the head and tool on down to the local hardware store and see what size bolt it would twist on to know for sure. If this is not the case, disregard.

The main reason I replied to message is I would like to know how to get a CT country catalog.

Thanks,

Williy

More info. I did find a web address for CT Country. They go by several different names now depending on the part of the country you are in. Try this address----http://www.farmandcountry.com/---There is a link there where you can order a catalog. Dan Robertson

Williy, stop by your nearest Quality Farm & Country store and pick up a catalog. That's where I get mine. Or you might call--- 1-888-828-3276- and see if they would send you a catalog. That is their toll-free order line number. Dan

I seem to remember that prior to the early 60's, Ford used x/16" bolts and nuts almost exclusively. I think they could get a better price on them as off sizes. That's why most your old Fords and Mercurys (plus tractors) had 7/16", 9/16", 11/16" etc. bolts in them.

My 1961 Ford 172 engine uses 7/16" head bolts.

Fred

I honestly don't know. I would not have replied had you not called my name. A quick check of my parts book here also lists two different heads and head bolts. My guess is that they changed from 7/16" to 1/2" as a running production change, but I'm sorry to say I don't know the specifics of that story. Maybe Tony Jacobs would know. He seems to know quite abit about the hundred series. They were a little before my time.

Steve, It is a production change and off the top of my head I do not remember the year , does your tractor have the 7/16 bolts or the 1/2 bolts ? I have VERY CAREFULLY drilled the earlier 7/16 heads to fit the later 1/2 blocks , and have used the later heads on the earlier blocks , used heads are getting hard to find so you have to grab what you can find , and do your best to make it work right . Thanks Tony Jacobs
