I have a 1972 2000 Ford 3 Cylinder diesel tractor that has a starter problem. The starter stays engaged when it is 40 degrees or less. I have spent around $400.00 dollars in the past three years (just on the starter) to try to correct this problem. Well, here we go again...Cranked it this morning started just fine, but the starter was motoring (not engaged with the flywheel though) so I shut it off, starter still turning. I had to pull the battery cable off. I have replace every thing that can be replace on the starter in the past 3 years and nothing has corrected this problem. The solenoid is new changed it last month. Less than 10 starts on it. The solinoid has 3 post on it, one marked STA, one marked S and one marked ING. The way this is hooked up is wire from switch is on ING, pos battery cable on S, and starter connected to STA. Is this correct? I have disconnected the ING switch wire and touch the battery with the pos battery cable and it spins like the key is in the start position. If this is a bad solinoid it is the 6th one in three years. With the solinoid off the starter continuity check are; ING to S=open, ING to STA=short. Is this normal? BTW I have a new battery too. The only thing I have not changed are the battery cables. Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to solve this problem. Oh yeah, it started running my new battery down over night in the last few days. I'm afraid that I'll wake up some morning and find my barn burned down because of a starter short.

Thanks
Bill

Is this solenoid remote mount, or does it sit on top of the starter? If it sits on top of the starter, I have never seen anything that has all those labled posts for a Lucas starter. I wonder if you have the right type of solenoid for it. Where are you getting the parts from? What brand are they? What brand starter do you have?

It is a lucas starter. Which parts should I buy?

Thanks for your help.

Go to your local NH dealer and get a factory solenoid for it. If it is a 5" starter, the part # should be D7NN 11390 B. This would be for the starter that has two straps going to the inside of the starter frame.

If you do indeed have a Lucas starter, then I doubt you have the right solenoid. I have never seen a factory supplied solenoid with the markings on them that you described.

No, it sits on top of the starter. I'm told that they are original ford parts, but I have my doughts. The parts are always supplied by the starter shop. I'll take the starter up there today and I'm sure it will test OK, as usual. I've taken it to two different shops. How do you tell if it is a Lucas brand? Is it possible to mount the solinoid upside down? I think it will fit.

Thanks
Bill

Have you checked the starter switch. It could be messing up and not breaking the connections when you release the key!!!!

Just a thought

Yeah, I took the ignition wire off the solinoid and touched the battery cable to the battery and the starter turned like the key was in the start position.

Just experienced the same problem on a '72 4000, 3cyl, diesel. Lucas 5" starter. Replaced solenoid, parts from Ford N-H. Parts man says there are 3 solenoids to choose from (matched original). Checked AND reset "drive pinion clearance" as shown in I&T Manual FO-31 (page 57). Installed starter - WORKS FINE. Opened old solenoid, some contact corrosion, also, suspect I messed up pinion clearance when I tightened unknown "loose nut" while renovating tractor.
