There is a cover plate under the right forward part of the transmission housing on my 841. It is about 3"x5" and held on by 4 bolts. It has a hole in the middle of it and mine has a cotter pin sticking out of the hole. Can anyone shed light on what it is and what I am looking at inside that cover plate? You folks are a ton of help. Thanks.

It is a drain for any stray oil that leaks into that area. The cotter pin is loose and moves around keeping the hole open.
What you can see in that hole is the clutch release bearing and the back of the pressure plate. I don`t know if the hole serves any other purpose.

Clutch Assembly. Cotter pin keeps hole open so any lubricant can drain out.

Can you work on the clutch from this access area or do you have to split the tractor at the transmission? If the area is no allow for drainage then can I assume transmission fluid is suppose to seep into this area? Thanks guys for the help. It does drain like it is suppose to. Apparently, the 841 I just purchased spent some time outside. I drained a fair amount of water mixed with a touch of tranny fluid and cleaned out a glob of dirt and grease.

You have to split the tractor to replace the clutch. I can`t imagine any "work" you could accompolish thru the hole.

When my rear main seal went, and the hole was plugged (and no cotter pin) there was about 5 quarts of engine oil waiting to gush out.
