I need to replace the rear axle seals. Checking the maint. manual suggests I better take it to a dealer. . . special tooling, drilling, chiseling etc. Can anyone tell me about doing this yourself? Can anyone tell me what it cost to have a dealer do it?
Thanks to all
Austin

Assuming your not planning on torching out the bearing then the dealer has a special press tool that allows the axel to be pressed out and back in.

I may be wrong, but I believe the "special press tool" the mechanic used was a block of wood on the floor so as not to damage the end of the axle when it hit as he used the weight of the bearing carrier and gravity to drive the bearing off.

We have a special puller for those axles - stands about 4 feet tall or so. With a little bit of heat on the shrink collar, we can pull the whole works off in one pass. That way you can re-use the bearing if it is in good shape. You also don't risk damaging the bearing or seal surface on the axle that way.

Bern: How about a description or a drawing of that puller. I have two more tractors to work on and I think both of them need outer seals.
Thanks

I'm not so sure that the time and expense you would incur in building one would be justified with only 4 axles to work on.

I don't have a picture handy here at home, however, it is fairly simple to imagine. Figure a round steel plate, doughnut shaped, roughly 3/4" thick with 6 holes drilled into it to fit over the existing studs on the hub. Drill and tap 3 more holes evenly spaced around this plate for some 5/8" ready rod. Get 3 - 4' lengths of this rod and run them through the slots of one heavy duty 3 yoke puller, and I mean heavy duty. I think the puller screw that we use on that puller is around 1 1/2" diameter and very fine thread. Sometimes I break out the 3/4" impact gun to "talk" to this thing, although my 1/2" will usually suffice.

I started this thread and am grateful for the helpful responses.
The IT manual describes the use of the puller tool (Nuday tool No. NCA-4235)and the cracking chisel (Nuday tool No. NCA 4234-A1) but has no pictures. The original Ford Maint. manual has the pictures. I've decided to have a New Holland Dealer do it for me; he says it isn't a big job. . . "maybe half a day for both sides" . . .as long as you have the right tools and know what you are doing. I don't qualify for the last two!
Thanks again to all

I just had that job done a dealer. All that stuff about special tools and drilling holes came down to a cutting torch. There is a shrink fit ring that holds everything together. They cut that off with a torch, then removed the old bearing and seal. Put in new seal and bearing(packed the bearing first) then heated the new ring and dropped it on the axle.
I won`t pay them to do it again, although it really wasn`t that much. 25.00 each side, if I remember correctly.
