While looking at the sheet metal that came with the tractor in the posts below I found a crayon marking "4000 LCG"....The spindles sure look short enough. And I might be reading the Serial number wrong. What Tony said about the other numbers being ground off because the transmission was a warranty unit makes sense. I just happen to have an extra 172 laying around if this motor doesn't work so as of now the decision is.. CONVERT! Any one want to trade a 4 speed setup for a perfectly bad Selectospeed? Well, maybe I'll throw in a couple of bucks to sweeten the deal!:-)
Anyhow, you guys that were looking for sheetmetal might be out of luck for the time being. Unless I want to run it undercover like my other tractors without sheetmetal..We'll update ya as I find parts and progress continues.

Hey Truck, I have a complete four speed setup that I will sell and I will take those S-O-S transmissions in trade if you want to get rid of them. E-mail me or call 1-413-267-5087 , I live in Mass. about 20 mins. away from the Mass Turnpike in Palmer exit 8 . Thanks Tony Jacobs

Why not just fix the SOS?

Two main reasons.... 1:The cover has been unbolted for long enough to grow a 6 inch diameter tree in front of the tractor. It was set in place and tarped at one time..... 2: Missing parts include all the shift cable parts and PTO cable. There is no shift handle. And a bonus reason.. I already have one broken SOS tractor. And I really didn't like it when it was working. I for sure wouldn't let my brother or anyone the least bit mechanically challenged operate it. Too easy to run into things with the "jumpiness".
