Just rebuilt a 172 engine and tried priming the system before installing the distributor. Using a drill and hex shaft to turn the pump. I can hear and feel the drill pull down so I am pretty sure it is pumping oil, however no oil shows up on the rocker arms and the gauge registers no pressure. I dropped the pan (twice), removed the pump and checked to see if it was pumping, checked the pickup and everything else, even replaced the oil pump. Still have the problem. Is it possible there is something blocking one of the oil passages? Any suggestions?

You should see sum oil in to distributor hole spilling out of the pump at the same time you are priming the system.

had the same problem with a used engine i brought. pulled pan, it looked like it had just been rebuilt. kept checking, they had left a bolt out of the cam retainer plate on the front of the engine, the bolt hole is tapped into the oil galley.

Your rocker feed lines should have little o-rings on the base that goes in the head. Make sure their on right and that the old ones are not stuck in the head.

Is the drill motor turning in the correct rotation? I believe it should turn counterclockwise. But not sure in that engine. albe

you might want to check your supplie tubes and also check the to make sure that the pan is not to close to the pump to cut off oil supplie.

Ford 172 CID distributor turns clockwise. I was just replacing the point in mine yesterday, and I remember this to be the case.
