I have a Ford 1953 NAA with an 8volt positive ground electrical system. I see information about 12V and 6V systems. Does anyone know anything about thys type of system. I would like to convert it to a 12 volt system. Does anyone know how I should go about it.

We have an 8v battery that has provided the
extra voltage needed to encourage cold weather starts. When properly installed, the voltage
regulators have been tweeked to output a higher
voltage, the bulbs and coil just takes the extra
2 volts and everyone is happy.
Our problem is that our tractor is seldom used
and charging the 8v battery is difficult with
a store-bought battery charger (6v doesn't really
charge it and 12v is hard on the battery).
Interstate batteries said that they charged wierd
voltage batteries by putting them in series to get
a reasonable net voltage to charge at.
Anyway, we are opting to do the same thing you
are and replace with a 12v alternator, replace
the coil, and our one light bulb.
The following site had been recommended by many
others who asked the same questions, it has a
12v conversion diagram: Link

It was very common for people to stick 8 volt batteries into their 6v systems. The bulbs & starter can handle it ok. Most people didn't even mess with adjusting the voltage regulator, but you'd have to check it for sure. The odds are you have a plain 6v system with an 8v battery.

Converting to 12v is pretty simple & there are probably dozens of different ways of adapting the GM one wire alternator to your tractor. Maybe someone will give you some tips, or maybe a tech article somewhere on this site (I'm new to the place myself).
