Ford 841 - Timing marks at zero, rotor pointing at #4 Plug wire. Plug wires in correct firing order 1-2-4-3. Number 1 plug on number 1 marked post on cap. Questions - Will the timing mark be at or near zero for every plug? In other words does the flywheel rotate 360 degrees per spark on each cyclinder? Or does the timing marks only indicate near zero when the number one cylinder is near TDC? Could my distributer cap be rotated 180 degrees. I suspect my timing to be off and would like to set it correctly. Found timing marks on flywheel then noticed the orientation of rotor. Please advice. Thanks to all.

A couple of things to remember about the Ford timing/distributer system.

The flywheels normally have 2 sets of timing marks 180 degrees apart. If you calculate the math, it works out that a set of timing marks will line up every 90 degrees of distributer rotation. So your timing marks will line up at all 4 rotor positions.

So just make sure you note where the rotor is when #1 is on the compression stroke and wire your cap the same way (CW rotation). The terminal marked #1 won't always be where the #1 wire should be. Just depends on who put the distributer in last!

Also the cap can only fit onto the distributer one way. First the dust shield fits on and it has a mark to line it up with the oiler. Then the cap indexes to the dust shield.

John, Great information - thanks. 2 sets of timing marks 180 degrees apart would mean that you could put the pick-up on any plug wire and time the engine.

Since I have always used plug #1, I assumed that only cylinder #1 was indexed. Also, I have never tried any other plug wires.

Since not to many people chimmed in and at the risk of sounding stupid here it goes. The camshaft turns 1/2 speed of crankshaft. Does the dist. turn same speed as cam? OK on a 4cycle eng. crank turns 2 complete turns to complete all 4 cycles. I've timed lots of engs. but never paid much attention to speed of the dist.shaft. I remove plug of #1cyl, crank eng slowly noting the compresson stroke by sticking thumb in sparkplug hole. Note at the same time timing marks to TDC . Look at rotor position in ref. to dist. cap terminal to the #1 wire. Also note what direction the rotor is turning,(very important) so the next wire is lined up in the correct firing order. That's as short as I can explain it! Howd I do guy's? Bill

Since the engine is a Otto cycle engine (4-cycle), the distributor is geared to a 1/2 RPM speed reduction. In other words, the rotor spins at 1/2 the speed of the flywheel.

The timing marks refer to clyinder #1 at TDC (zero degrees). The strobe picks-off the pulse to plug #1, so you see the marks at the cylinder #1 event.

I don't know about the distributor cap. Although I have had mine off several times, I have never disconnected the wires. (Logically, if you can rotate the cap by 180 degrees, then the cap would simply be miswired.)
