I need to know how to idenitify a used block thats not in the tractor, and the owner is not sure what it came out of. I was told a gas block would be the same as my diesel, but what if the block in question is an older 800? Will it be ok to build my 801 diesel? I have read some of the responses to problems in this forum, and it seems to me there's people that have a very good knowledge of fords in here. I will certainly appreciate any help I get. HELP!

The gas block is not the same as a diesel. There are many differences even tho they look a lot alike. The diesel has about twice as many head bolts as the gas and there are ports cast and machined in the bottom end that the gas block doesn`t have. The diesel crank will work in the gas engine, but the gas crank won`t work in the diesel. If you need a diesel block I have one that is in loose hands. I am in Az. at the moment but will be back in Mo. after Jan 2nd. Get in touch with me if you need it.

The block will have a code cast in to it on the right side. An early 800 block would probably have the code EAF-6015-J. Get back to us with the code cast into the block in question and somebody can probably give an approximate date for it.

Unfortunately, it is hard to tell the differences between parts revisions from the parts book. Apparently, some of the later diesel blocks were run without sleeves. This probably made the block stronger, but made it harder to rebuild, too. Personally, I would be a little concerned about putting a used gas engine block to work in a diesel.
