Has anyone had success in curing a leaking steering problem other than just replacing the seal. I've replaced the seal twice all ready. Thanks.

Dean,

Are you talking about a PS fluid leak coming out of the top of the column? If so, its the seal thats still the problem. If seal is in backward (chevron pointing up instead of down) or if the surface on which the seal mates is damaged or worn, that will cause leakage. Also make sure steering shaft isn't bent.

I've just replaced the seal and upper steering bushing on my '71 2000 and it fixed the problem. Worst problem I had was getting the @#!%# steering wheel off! When I re-installed the column (with the new seal) over steering shaft, I made sure there were no burrs, corrosion or other snags on the shaft which would cut the seal lip as it was slid down into position. I also greased up the shaft so that the seal lip slid smoothly down the shaft.

One other thing you might check is to make sure there isn't some problem causing excessively high pressure in the fluid circuit. There is a way of checking the pressure which I believe is outlined in the I&T Shop Manual.

Good luck!

Jim gave some good advice, but I just wanted to add that the steering shaft is prone to rusting and pitting due to the fact that moisture sometime accumalates around the shaft just above the seal. There are seal kits available that come with a speedy sleeve to help remedy the problem.
