I put a alternator on my 640, a delco, with the built in regulator or diodes the thing charging 30 amp at a full run and 10 amp idle speed. the baterry is fully charge.I think it is over charging, could I have done something wrong ? I have not put a volt meter to it yet.

The only way to tell if the regulator is working or not is to put a voltmeter on the alternator. If it's going much over 15 volts, then the regulator isn't working. Otherwise, it's something else. For example, a battery with a shorted cell will cause a high charging rate.

The charging rate should taper off to almost zero withing ten or twenty minutes after starting. If it continues to charge at a high rate it will boil the battery and damage it. Is it a 12 volt alternator? Did you change the battery and tractor electrics to 12 volt? or is it a diesel 640?

Texadian, Yes it is a 12 volt alternater, and I change all the electrics to 12.volts I may not have let it run long enought to see if it will taper down. Thanks BEN .So. TEX
