Hello, I don't know much about Ford's. A friend is looking to buy a 4000 with a Selectomatic, for use around his place, light mowing and the like. Works good now....Do they last...nice tractor $2500. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance

PS. I am a JD crawler guy. please don't hold it against me !

While they were a good design, the tranny has 3 times the parts in it, and can be a handful to adjust. Some parts are difficult to find. In general they sell for 1/2 of a regular tranny machine these days, so don't pay too much for it. Can be a bargin, can be an expensive headache. Pay half of regular & take your chances...

Do you know which 4000 we are talking about here? The 4 cylinder one that looks like a jubilee or the 3 cylinder one that is a bit larger?

Either are great tractors. See if you can get the repair history on the transmission.Lotsa of recent repairs may be a bad sign. Also he may want to try driving it and seeing how he likes the way it moves in close quarters. My 3000 I called a jerkomatic because it wasn't very controllable backing up to a trailer. Around these parts a SOS deducts half the value of a tractor unless you are at an auction where people can't see the SOS lever because of the crowd. It can make a SOS a real bargain if it has life left in the tranny.
