I rebuilt the carb and have new plugs, wires, rotor button, good gas,new coil but still cuts up with no load.I can get it in the yard in 4th and let out on the clutch and it pulls strong. It runs good under a load.I even sprayed wd 40 around the intake and it did not phase it.I am going to install new points and condenser tomorrow but I do not think that will fix it.Does anyone have a suggestion of what to do?It has a little slack in the distributor shaft, how much is tolerable?

Check the points gap again and make sure you do not have way too much clearance.

Also if the points are OK loosen the distributor and turn the distributor clockwise.(direction of rotation of the rotor.) a little bit and see if this improves it any.

If neither of these things changes it remove the distribitor plate and inspect the centrifugal advance springs. If one of them are off it will affect the timing.

I got out there tonight and pulled the number one plug wire and no change, and the others would just about make it quit when I pulled them.I then pulled the plug out and it is firing good.I feel that the valve lash or cam may be the culprit.Did the valves and valve train give much trouble on these?

Hi Jim. Did you check the compression and valve lash? Low compression in one or more cylinders either due to worn rings or to improperly closing valves could cause it to break up on idle but still run strong under load.

Did the tractor behave this way before you tuned it up?

My guess is the carb. Double check the float height; it may be set too high.

Good luck.

Yes it did act this way when my dad bought it about 3 weeks ago,but I could pull the choke out an inch and smoothed right up.I went through the carb entirely and removed all the brass fittings and everything looked great.I turned the carb upside down and the float had a very slight incline to it.I have it running a lot better than it was but no cookie yet. Thanks
