I am in the process of rebuilding the motor on my 4500 diesel backhoe. The motor had been bored to .030 before I purchased it, when I pulled the head it was clear that the motor needed to be bored due to damage in the rear cyl. After I removed the motor and disassembled it I honed the damaged cyl. to the point where it is .045 over in some spots. The Ford shop manual seems to indicate that clearance in-between the piston and wall should be between .008-.009, does this mean I can have my machine shop bore the whole cyl. to a uniform .048 - .049 and install a .040 piston??? It seems like it would be a little loose but I did notice the other undamaged cyls. had a loose fit when I pulled the motor apart. What I want to do is have the other two cyls. also bored to .040 as well if I understand the specs. properly..... ... Thanks for any help I can get.....

Rodger, Compared to the automotive rule-of-thumb for piston to cylinder wall clearance (0.001" clearance per inch of piston diameter), 0.0085 to 0.0095" clearance might seem to be little loose but it's correct. The 201 aluminum pistons expand so much more than the block as the engine warms up that the clearances become just right for lubrication. Buy your new piston first, rebore the block to provide 0.0085 to 0.0095" clearance. Do not rebore using the automotive rule-of-thumb, pistons will expand too much, leave no clearance for lube and will score. The above is true for 4-ring pistons, if you're using the newer 3-ring pistons, they have controlled expansion design and less clearance is required.

To Texadian - I appreciate your response and it sounds like you really know the 3 cyl. Fords. One follow-up question. If I buy a .040 over piston will the actual size work out to, for the 4.4 bore 201 motor, 4.44" or for some reason to they call it a .040 over and the piston size is actually something different ??? Thanks again.

I would believe that 040 over piston are already sized for the clearance required.

You might consider sleeving the engine and start with standard pistons again.
