Is a 4000 SU just a 3000 with a 4000 engine? Does this mean that a 4000 engine will bolt into a 2000 or 3000? Our group has a surplus 4000 skid unit. Let us say we have access to a 2000 parts tractor. Can we build a 4000 SU? Will the front axle and powersteering stuff bolt on? Including steering column and box. Rear wheels, sheet metal, seat, etc. Has anyone faced the difficulty that the 4000 doesn't have rear sockets for the radius arms? If we can't figure out how to manage that, the project will have to sit til we find a 4000 parts tractor. Did any version of the real 4000 use the radius arm type steering gear?

I believe the following to be correct: The 4000SU is a 4000 engine AND drivetrain with small rear rubber and a 2/3000 front bolster, axle and steering system. Any 3 cylinder engine will bolt onto any bolster and clutch housing built to accomodate a 3 or 4 (or even 6) cyl engine built from 1965 to the '90's. All 3cylinder blocks are the same length, as are all 4 cyl blocks. But the oilpan must match the bolster; i.e. steel pan with a 4 bolt bolster or cast pan for a 6 bolt bolster. Most 4000 clutch housings have a land machined in the location of the radius rod mounts, some are even drilled and tapped. If yours isn't, it could be without a great deal of trouble. The 4000SU was the only version of the 4000 that used a double drop steering box, thank God!
