Timing

I may have installed timing gear wrong. When cylinder #1 is TDC and top of compression stroke, rotor is pointing to cylinder #4. Do I remove the timing gear and turn camshaft a full turn. The distributor was never removed or touched.

Before you remove the gear, check the valve/camshaft movement with the distributor position. Number one cylinder may be ready for the exhaust stroke, which would make number four ready for ignition/power. If that is the case, all is OK. If not, all you have to do is pull the distributor, turn it 1/2 round, reinstall, and crank it up; OR move each plugwire 2 holes clockwise in the distributor cap.

Sorry, but yes. You can't fix a misallignment of the crank and camshaft except by alligning the dots.

Consider this just a part of the education process that comes for free with every tractor restoration.

How did you get the engine that far apart without taking off the distributor??
