I just bought my first tractor today. I had been looking for about 6 months. I knew I wanted a ford. My dad had an 860 and that is what I grew up with. The guys I work with tried talking me out of buying it. I looked at the IH"s but went back to the Ford"s. Anyway, I found a 1954 4000 selecto O speed with a loader, blade, 2bottom plow for 3700.00. I bought it, and then I found this site and read the article about how bad the selecto o speed was. /could anyone give me some info.

Kile, welcome to this board. The best place for a manual is your local dealer, get the ford service manual reprint and maybe the IT manual too if you think you need it. I have both and the Ford manual is alot better but the IT book has its good points too. I have a 63 4000 SOS that my Dad bought new and have not had any trouble with it and it has over 5400 hrs on it and the cable was broke for several years so the proofmeter wasn't working. Just don't abuse it and preform regular maintaince such as adjusting the bands properly and changing the oil. Good luck and check out the archives on this site. Greg NE

Kile, I would leave the tractor alone till you can get maybe the owners manual and for sure the service manual for your tractor. The SOS tranny is complicated and is easily messed up, just read the warning in the post above. Once you read up on it, it will be much easier to fix and maintain properly. Good luck Greg NE

The Select-o-Speed was introduced in 1959 and the 4000 was introduced in 1962 or '63 (not sure). Bottom line, your tractor is not a 1954. Several years newer than that.

Kile,

Don't panic! I have a 1960 model SOS that I have had since it was new and has never given a single problem. If they are not abused and are maintained properly they are great. At the other end of the spectrum, if abused and not cared for they can be big trouble. You can get lots of advice here. Spend some time reading archives. Enjoy your Ford!
