I have a Ford 2000 that I use to run a 7ft. finish mower. Last summer, the PTO started jumping out of gear while operating. It did it more if the going was bumpy. If you tried to hold the lever in, you could feel it trying to kick out. Any ideas of where to look first? Am I going to have to break the tractor in half? This is not a "live" PTO. Tractor is 4 speed, gasoline.

Andy, It's also possible you have a broken/missing
snap/retaining ring in the PTO shaft assmebly. Take ahold of the PTO shaft (engine off) and see if your able to feal any end play. It should be solid. If it can be pulled out and pushed back in more than a 1/4" or so one of the two retaining snap rings could be out of place or missing on the shaft. As you cross that bumpy ground you mentioned the shaft is pulled and pushed back and forth causing the same motion in the shifter. It's an easy fix if that's your problem. After you drain the rear end remove the four bolts from the rear bearing cap and pull the shaft assembely. Be sure that drive shaft on your finish mower is greased so that it slides nice (changes length)
and that it's not bent..... .....could be what poped a snap ring all of a sudden after your pto worked fine for years. Rgds,AB
PS - I used to use the bundge method too till I
got around to fixing mine also.

There is some end play in the shaft, and I was wondering if this might be the cause. It was the first thing I was going to try, as it is the easier fix. The tractor is at church, where I use it, and when we get home from Florida, I will haul it home and try this fix first. Thanks.

My 860 does the same thing. I also use the bungy cord method to hold it in place until I have a chance to tear into it.

Matilda does it too! (My 8N) Sometimes I ride with my foot back there to hold the lever in, and sometimes I put a bungee cord on it. It's a pain in the behind but...the fix means to tear into it and replace the worn detents.

Common problem. If you fix yours and you really like that kind of work, gimmee a call! I'll buy the beer!
