It very well could be the Lucas regulator.... They can be taken apart and checked and adjusted if you are familiar with a volt meter and how to use it. The Ford Service manual has very detailed instructions about how to test and adjust the regulator but I would bet you have a little corrosion or a set of stuck points. Email me if you want those instructions.

I removed the ground cable and put an ammeter from the battery to the cable to read the battery drain. Then, I removed one fuse at a time and finally the starter lead to determine if any of the wiring circuits created the drain. Any remaining significant drain is likely the alternator’s rectifier bridge in my case, of the regulator in generator systems. The alternator lead could be disconnected to verify the problem.

It's a good idea to test the battery, because batteries have internal drain, which may be high in a defective battery. Alternator charging systems also have parasite drain. Measured drains around 50ma are considered normal for many systems.

If yours has an alternator, it could be bad diodes in the alternator. Pull it and take it to a parts store that has an alternator tester (bench type). They can check the diodes.
Another possibility would be the voltage regulator. Not much way to test that except replace it and see if the problem goes away.

Pete,

You might check to be sure the mice have not built a nest on top of the gas tank. They did on my 3000, chewed the wiring and in my case shorted out the starter solnoid wire to the coil wire. When I started the 3000 the starter would not disengage - made a terrable racket! And I couldn't get the engine to stop until I took loose the battery cable. The mice could have chewed thru insulation on a hot wire so it is leaking juice to ground. I hope that is not what has happened to you.

Regards,
Larry

Typical problem.

When you re-connect your battery look for a spark at the terminal, unless you have a very weak draw you should see one. Then isolate pieces of your electrical system one at the time to find the culprit.

A bad alternator can keep a circuit 'open' while the engine is off, it can do this and still charge too. Otherwise you just have to track it on down, light switch, voltage regulator, key switch etc...Glow plug on a diesel can do it.

Good luck!
