4500 power steering very stiff.
Cannot see an external filter. Is
there an internal that can be reached
by some way underneath?

They are two types of power steering systems on the 4500s.The older type like mine uses the main
hydraulic for the resivor & thats where the filter
is. First remove the front grill, remove a 5/8" drain
plug on the left side of the resivor(have a funnel
& 5 gal. can ready)I know it dont look like it but
it holds 5 gal. Drain it then remove the 3" section of hose on the right hand upper side of the resivor & use a
1 1/4" wrench to remove the filter & clean it.

Could be as henning described, or earlier tractors have a separate pump and reservoir. For this style, remove top of reservoir located to the left of the battery, in front of exhaust pipe. Remove filter, replace, replace lid. Specify pump/reservoir combo, or separate pump and reservoir, the filters are different.

I'm assuming this is a threecyl. british diesel,in that case the Filter is located inside the Powersteering Pump. That's where it is on my 4610 and 5600.just loosen the nut in the centre, where the line goes in,pull the Pumphousing off,it should be right there.A messy job,but not hard to do!hope this helps.

Al is right on. Suggestions: it is a messy job, pull off the bottom line also and let the steering fluid drain first. If it has Dexron in it now, replace new fluid with Dexron, don't mix Dexron with some other fluid. You may want to pull the pump off and replace the rubber gaskets inside. Rebuild kits are cheap, about 20 bucks. My $.02
