RE: 401 cid ford diesel. After engine shut down, there is a fuel dump/leak that comes out of a small black plastic tube that appears to be connected to the back side of the fuel injection pump (MIMIMICK (sp?)/CAV system). This tube just extends down to the tractor frame rail below the injection pump. It appears to be connected to nothing on this end; its just open-ended and drips on the ground. It will leak about a pint +/-, then it stops. No apparent leak while in operation, just after shutdown. This undoubtly a dangerous situation. Does any body have any ideas what's causing this? Is this normal? How to repair, if necessary etc.? Thanks in advance for responses!

Your leak is somewhat common if you do not change the oil in the injector pump regularily. If your engine still starts and runs good you may only need to change the pump oil. All barrel and plungers leak some, that is the only way they have for lubrication so Summs/CAV instructed to change pump oil every time you service your engine oil. There is a drain plug on the bottom, a full level plug on the side, and a filler cap on the top. If you have ill cranking or running problems you may have wated too long and may have to have the pump built.

I would think a pint every shutdown goes beyond somewhat common.

That tube is an overflow for the cambox of the injection pump. The cambox is supposed to have engine oil in it to lube the pump. Apparently, your pump is leaking fuel into this area, probably past the barrels and plungers. You are looking at an injection pump overhaul to fix it, and hopefully there isn't too much damage to the cam from being lubed with fuel instead of oil.
