I have a 1968 4500 TBL tractor.I bought the ford
service manual but the steering section says to
see the 5000 series for information. Not gonna buy another manual so does anyone know
how to check or adjust the pump? The pump has one
input line & two smaller hi pressure lines, why? It allso has two acorn nuts with springs under them for relief pressure, one facing you on the side & a smaller on on the back facing the driver.Which needs to be adjusted to raise pressure?

You are describing the P/S pump used proir to 1969, so my comments apply to that pump w/ separate reservior. The 3 lines attaching to the pump are: suction, output to the steering valve, and bypass for oil that has passed over the relief valve. The 2 plugs oriented horizontally capture the flow control valve spool and its spring. The actual relief valve is under the smaller plug at the top of the pump, just ahead of the ports. Relief pressure is set by shimming the spring under that plug. I believe the correct relief setting for that tractor is 850psi, but it could be 1100psi. You should verify the correct setting from another source.

Thanks for the reply,I will try and adjust the
pressure & see what happens.The Ford/New Holland
says you have to buy a new pump because its made
of aluminum it cant be rebuilt.I wander if any
one has ever tried to rebuild one?

The problem is the housings are softer than the shafts and gearset. Older farmalls, and other brands using aluminum hyd pumps suffer the same fate, there just isn't much you can do. A direct replacement from NH will run near $1200, it would be cheaper to convert to the pump/reservoir combo used on later tractors, just modify/replace the lines. Direct replacement and new style pumps are also available in the aftermarket (A&I for sure)for less.
