I think my starter has a dead spot on it. I tried removing it while I was painting it, but I could never free it up and pull it out.

Is there a trick to removing the starter? I think I'll have it looked at by the starter repair guy.

Advice on how to pull it, and then reinstall it w/o a lot of swearing. thank you Bill

Remove the bolts from the starter, put the tractor in high grear and rock it forward and back using the tires. That should free it.

It sounds like your starter is engaged. And its not going to be easy to remove. Somehow you have to get it disengaged from the flywheel before you will be able to move it. Then you may have to remove the oilfilter in order to get enough room to get it out. I will be seeing my mechanic in a day or two. And i will ask him how to disengage it while on the tractor. John

I had the same problem with a starter hung up on Flywheel.I loosen all mounting bolts of starter to bell housing and then jacked up rear tractor wheels and put tractor in fifth gear and rocked the wheels back and forth it finally move enough to pull out.The starter will move a little when rocking the wheels .Don't rock to far each way as you might bind it tighter.Worked for me ,good luck
