3000 ps pump

I was going to replace the rubber hoses on my power steering system with metal lines. The hoses are way too long and flop all over the place. But the return line connection on my 72 3000 power steering pump stands up at the 12:00 position which doesn't seem right and would make it difficult to attach a new line. (to avoid the oil filter) It seems like it should be almost straight down or at another angle. It does not appear to be moveable. Do you think this pump is from a later model or a different series tractor? If it is, should the pressure setting be higher than 650 psi? I know the 4000 and 5000 operate at higher pressures. At low rpm the pump puts out 650psi. at 16-1800rpm it puts out 900. It steers well at higher rpm, sluggish at low. Help. I'm almost there, I think. By the way the 134 works well. Thanks.

The fitting is probably correct, actually the canister should be positioned so the fitting is nearly at 11:00 when viewed from the rear. The vent on the can should be parallel to a small boss protruding from the pump body near the o-ring groove. The return line runs below the exhaust manifold and drops down to the pump. The only difference in the pumps for models within a given timeframe appears to be the shim pack at the relief valve spring. Lesser power assist at low RPMs is probably more to do with decreased flow than pressure issues. Personally, I wouldn't be afraid of 900psi relief pressure on this system, but it is above spec.

Rick has said it all. FWIW: I also replaced the bad p.s. lines with new ones which I made myself out of 3/8" steel tubing. If you make 'em yourself, don't use copper, and make sure the lines are double flarred. My $.02
