I have white smoke from crankcase vent on 1801 industrial. Runs good lots of power. too much smoke.Could this be a timing issue or just plain old rings.
I did the head gasket and cyl. head has been completely redone. It did not appear to have cyl. problems as the walls were clean and no problems w/oil leakdown test so I thought the rings were fine.
Any ideas?

i have a ford 172 with the same problem. Smokes from the breather on the valve cover; runs great otherwise. I"m going to check compression and valve lash. A friend suggested putting a heavier weight oil in the crank case (20/50?).

White smoke usually means water.

How about the breather where the oil is pured in?
Are the elements clean and not crudded up? If you were making blowby seems you would be smoking there too.

I would think about excessive clearance around the valves.

Good sealing valves will aggravate worn rings, or so I have been told.

Thanks for the responses. To clear it up a little it is a 172" gas model.
I checked the timing again and it is only slightly advanced but runs well at that setting.
Both crank and valve cover breather emit the smoke. I will have to check them again for crud.
I am going to warm it up and drain all fluids and clean and change all filters again. Thanks again for any ideas.

White blow-by without white exhaust smoke would be something of a mystery to me. However, things may not be so mysterious to somebody who really knows this stuff. I'll be interested in responses.

In diesels (I’m assuming it’s a diesel), white exhaust smoke sometimes indicates poor injector timing or leak-down. I'm assuming that tear down required for the head work didn't involve the injector pump drive, so engine timing shouldn't be an issue. It would be good to check valve clearances and injector spill time. If the timing and clearances are within spec, the injectors might be checked.
