Mostly paint color. There were some upgrades made from the 600 series ('55-'57) to the 601 series ('58-'61), but mostly minor. Power steering became a factory option. The hp is a little more, but I don't know why....a little more compression perhaps. Also, a diesel engine became available with the 601 series and in '59 the SOS transmission made its appearance. Color-wise, the 600 series was red and gray, much like the 8N and Jubilee (gray sheetmetal, gray castings). The 601 series was almost all red with gray fenders and gray grille. The 601 series also got a name...they called it the Workmaster. The corresponding 801 series (bigger engine) was called the Powermaster. Here's a site to help understand these machines more.

Jim is right, the "1" designates the next series. There were several minor changes, such as going to fine splines on the axles and couplers between the trans and rearend, relocation of the right brake actuator shaft, and probably some others, but essentially they are the same.

according to my sevice manual...the "1" indicates the production years...or "series designation built 1958to 1962..... to more specific...if your first digit is 6..that means four wheel adujustable axle with a 134 cdi enging...if second digit is 4..that indicats a 4 spead tranny.....if third digit is 1.. that indicats the years of production...1958 to 1962...all this is right on the first page of the manual

64"0" = 600 series
64"1" = 601 series
