It was a pretty good idea, worked well enough. But there are some strong negatives no one has mentioned yet:

There are 3 times as many parts in there. When the tranny needs work (nothing lasts forever, and this is knocking on 40 years old) it will take 3 times the parts to overhaul. Some of the parts are getting hard to find. Finding a local mechanic to get it all right is also getting difficult. Generally people don't get rid of them unless they are shot. So -

Tractors equipped with SoS sell for about 1/2 the price of a comparable 5-speed machine. Do _NOT_ get suckered into paying big bucks for it. You'll be the one they talk about at the coffee stop! :)

Honestly, do not pay top dollar for an SoS. Some dealers hold on to them & look for the suckers that will do so. Just walk away from them.

I have a 1965 6000 Commander that I bought two years ago. It had sat for several years. After changing all the fluids, this has been a working tractor and also do a few local shows with it. Kind of stands out amongst the 8n, 9n crowd. Just don't use the inching pedal as a clutch and you will be alright. In my owners manual, it says to just put the trans in gear and go. Change up or down as you would a newer powershift style trans.

I have a 67 3000 with SOS--I like it very much. The key to buying a SOS is to detrermine how it has been taken care of. Many people think the inching pedal is to be used as a clutch. this is not the case.

I too have heard the misconception about the inching pedal, but never had anyone tell me how it should be used properly. Could you elaborate?

There are three times when I use the inching pedal: taking off, stopping, and when backing to hook up implements. I do not shift betwen 4th and 5th gears, there is a huge surge between these speeds. If I am going from 4th to 5th, I stop the tractor and start off in 5th. I use my tractor to mow about 10 acres around my cabin and I like the shift on the go as part of my mowing area is inclined, therefore a I am constantly changing speeds.
--get you a copy of the Ford owners manual, it does a good job explaining the SOS opertation.

The manual says to just shift it up or down. The inching pedal is to stop, or go into reverse. However, you do not have to use the inching pedal to go from forward to reverse, or vise versa.

Word of caution on forward to reverse or vice versa - too fast and you get whiplash. Also, moderation in everything is an especially good policy with these trannies. As old as these are it is probably not a good idea to be stress testing them all the time. Use the inching pedal to do just that - inch along. Shifting between gears on-the-fly is what the trans was designed to do and, properly taken care of and adjusted accordingly, it works slicker than fresh goose dung.

Larry has said it the best. If you check back in the archives you will find alot of negatives and some positives. I will say that I have a 1963 4000 that my Dad bought new and the tranny has not been touched except for band adjustments and oil changes. They just don't hold up to abuse too well. Good luck Greg NE

My 881 has over 5500 hours on the proofmeter. It has pie weights, front weights and fluid in the tires. One lift arm has been replaced and the balls have been pulled out of both ends of that one as well as the original on the other side. Steel strap has been welded around the ends of the arms to hold the balls in. The original drawbar is bent in a "V" shape. I bought it from the original owner. It had been operated by three sons as they grew up. I think maybe this one saw a little abuse. It did have the torque limiter disc replaced in 1996

Generally, I agree with comments already made. However, I'll note that in my '67 4000 SOS 3cyl diesel, the SOS failed a couple of years ago. Suspect causes I think the torque limiting clutch was somewhat siezed because the tractor was"jumpy", and it was my habit to "pop" clutch in swinging drawbar on conditioner from feild to road position. I changed out the tranny to a 4 spd manual. But in my research prior to deciding on the conversion, I found that Ford had put the SOS's into service without the exhaustive feild tests that are normally made on a new "prototype"
I also have a '64 5000 with SOS and it is good & troublefree
