Some were made in Belgium

Belinda: All of the responses are applicable only if your tractor is not English made. I think it is, and imported thru Canada like many were. The "B" you noticed stands for Basildon England. I also saw several tractors when I was looking for my 2000, and those with the "B" prefix did not have the usual codes referred to in all the manuals and links provided to you in the other responses. They did have several serial numbers on the boss on the bell housing but none made sense at least in terms of what is supposed to be there. I researched some serial number years at the NH dealer (Who had them in a big book) but I found out that the English serial numbers overlapped some years (so why have a serial number right !). By the way, all of the 3 cyl. engines were made in Basildon, commonly referred to as "BDE" engines, regardless of whether or not the rest of the tractor was US. If you find a link somewhere that breaks down Englinsh serial numbers, please post it, since this question seems to come up quite often on this Board. My $.02.

Serial #'s with B prefixes are not able to be used to date tractors. Find the unit code near the serial # you found, either on the data plate under the hood or on the clutch housing. Will be something like 9G15B. That will tell you the day and shift the tractor was built.

Please note that the following information applies to the 1965 thru 1974 Ford 4000 tractor.

I think 5G16 may be a partial production code and can be translated as follows:

5 = Year 1965

G = Month July

16 = 16th day of the month

There should also be a letter "A", "B" or "C" at the end of this code, e.g. 5G16A. This letter is the production shift code. A = Midnight, B = Day and C = Evening.

On the right side of the tractor just behind the starter there is flat surface on the transmission housing. There will be two threaded holes just below this flat surface. On this flat surface there are three numbers inscribed into the metal. The top number is the tractor model number, second is the production code, and the third is the serial number.

I have saw these numbers on many of the "C" prefixed tractors. I have no personal experience with the "B" prefixed tractors, but I believe they should follow the same rules as the "C" prefixed ones.

Go look on the tractor again. Try to clean this area to find the codes. It takes time, but it can be done.

Please note that this information also exist under the hood panel above the battery on a sticker. Try looking there first. Many of the tractors have lost this sticker or have had them painted over.

Scroll farther down ,see "Ford 4000 serial number" from Mark Gundrum & look at the various answers; that should at least narrow down the year

I have checked with several local dealers, the B at the start of the serial number confuses them. Any idea what the B stands for? Also how do I find out what year model it is?

Oh yeah, you cannot tell the year by the serial number on an english made tractor. They did not go in order. You will have three sets of numbers Model#, Date Code, Serial#. You will need the date code to tell what year.

The B mean it is an english made and C means US made. All you need to knwo for a manual is Ford 4000. The manual will cover many modals.
