I talked to a guy selling what he thinks is a Ford 2000 diesel. He says it will start and run on ether but won't continue to run. He says he had the injector pump re-built but it still won't run right.

I haven't looked at it yet, but he says it is in good shape and has 2 new back tires and 1 new front.

Any ideas what might be wrong with it? he wants $1000 for it. It may be a lot of work to fix and $ and I'm not sure it is worth fooling with. Any thoughts?

Sound like a buy to me.
The tires are worth half the cost and you could double your money on parts if you never got it to run right.

At that price, I'm interested too! I've got to go down to NC in two weeks, and could rationalize pulling the trailer and going further for a $1000 tractor.

If it is a Dexta then nothing of the major mechanicals cross over to the Ford. The Dexta had a six-speed manual (three speed w/hi-lo), three cylinder Perkins (manufactured to Ford specs) diesel, and more rounded sheetmetal than the Fords of the same vintage. Dextas were made in England and exported mainly to the European continent. Canada got quite a few and apparently a good number made it to the US market. Check out the Fordson Discussion Forum here on the YTMag site. There are some very knowledgeable and helpful guys posting on it.

Lets see.. two tires, mounted, $400.That leaves $600 for the rest of the tractor? If you can get the price down, great. If not, that's ok too. I paid $400 for a seized up 2000 4 cylinder with a selecto speed and got every penny back out of it. A four speed is easily worth $500 , and a rebuildable engine is worth the rest no problem!
If it's the three cylinder 2000, throw it on ebay and double your money in a week.

Which model 2000? The early 60's model with the 4 cyl or the later ('65 and after) 3 cyl? If it's the early one I'd guess you could part it out and make back your thousand. Especially with new tires. I might even be interested in the tires. Are they 13.9-28?

I think it is a 3 cylinder...I was hoping for a 4 cylinder. I don't know about the tires as to what size.

Here in Alabama, I see a lot of what I think are Fordson Dexta's called Ford 2000s and vice versa. I don't know if there is a big difference or if they are basically the same.

Do you?
