I replaced the key switch with FNH switch E7NN11N501AC as called for in the manual. This switch is a 4 position sw. A 5 position sw is required as follows; Off-Accessory-On-Heat-Start. The "Heat and Start" positions should be self cancelling and return to On when released. The correct sw. P/N E7NN11N501AB is no longer available. Does anyone know of source for after market sw that may work as the original? I can rewire and make the "Heat" a separate function with a push button as a last resort. Thanks for all comments.

Uh, wait a minute. I put the same NH switch (e7nn11n501ac)in my 2000 6 mths. ago and it is self cancelling. That is, turn the key clockwise and you go from off to accessory--on/accessory--heat (first spring loaded detent/starter motor off)--start (second spring loaded detent/heat off/starter motor on). Release the key at that point and it snaps back to on/accessory. I am certain my switch worked that way inasmuch as my tractor was missing the ignition switch, so I had the NH mechanic demonstrate with a testor how the key positions worked. Therefore, there is no need for a seperate heat button as you suggest, since all you have to do is turn the key all the way to start and the heat mode is off. My $.02

Tim; Thanks for that comment. I am going to check out that switch further. Talked to a FNH guy and he says same as you.

I dunno the part number but:

Thermostart is a leetle different than a pre-heater! You may check and see what you have first.

From the off position, turn the key to the left, it should be spring loaded and require you to hold it in the left turned position. This is preheat (and what it is actually doing is preheating a little bit of fuel that it is fixing to spray into the intake) NOT GLOW PLUGGING the cylinders.

Keep turning the switch to the left and you will engage the starter AND the thermostart simultaneously. OR Let off of the preheat (switch returns to the OFF position, then turn to the right [ON] and further right to engage starter without thermostart assistance.

The thermostart does 2 things: #1 it heats up a shot of diesel & #2 It squirts that diesel into the intake when you turn the motor over.

It's an effective starting aid...not quite as spiffy as ether but definitely safer. See if you have thermostart first...

Good point. I didn't know the difference. My response referred to a glow plug on a thermostart set-up.
