I'm shopping for a TLB and am looking at a Ford 4500. Anything to be wary of or to look for? Is it a good or bad choice and what is the approx value in the upper midwest? Thanks.

I BOUGHT MY FORD 4500 LAST YEAR, ABOUT THIS TIME. I GAVE 3,OOO FOR IT. IT HAD A LOADER LIFT ARM BROKEN INTO. AND BEEN WELDED AT SEVERAL AREAS ON LIFT ARM WHER HAD BEEN BROKEN BEFORE. THE FORD LOADER IS NOT MADE OF VERY THICK METAL COMPARED TO IH OR CASE. I PULLED THE LOADER OFF AND REWORKED IT, LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN FIRST PLACE. ALSO HAD TO REPLACE SHAFT IF BUCKET CYLINDER AND REBUILT. THE BACKHOE IS NOT VERY FAST WORKING COMPARED TO THE JOHN DEERE HOES I HAVE OWNED. THE SWING SLACK PROBLEM IN THESE FORDS IS A NEWCENSE. THE BEST THING I LIKE IS THAT THE TRACTOR PART OF THIS MACHINE IS EASIER TO WORK ON THAN ANY OTHER BACKHOE Made. WICH IS MOST IMPORTANT ON AN OLDER MACHINE FOR PERSONAL USE. ALSO PARTS ARE VERY EASY TO GET AT MY LOCAL FORD DEALER, MOST ALL TRACTOR PARTS INTERCHANGE WITH THE FARM TRACTORS. GOOD LUCK J.R.

I have a 1965 4500 that I bought 22 years ago for 5500.00. It has been an excellent piece for my own personal use.I had 3 older case hoes,2 international hoes, and a massey-ferguson before and like the ford best.Mine is a chain type swing .Just make sure you don't let the hoe swing against the stops.

I've got one and it's given me good service. A strong old machine. 52 hp. Mine has the swing motor. Some had chains on swing cylinders for the boom. If it does, check this area for wear. See how much play is in the boom when it stops swinging. I like the powershift better. Mine is a straight shift. I paid $7500 for mine and have done some work on it.
