I have a Ford 2000 has run well for me (& my family) for 20+ years. Recently the steering wasn't working. Being a woman & non mechanical - I'm concerned I may have been quoted. To have the steering box repaired will run me $60.00 in parts (2 seals, nuts bolts o-ring) The labor has been quoted conservatively I'm told at $475.00. It may take that many man hours to remove & repair this steering box - but I don't want to be an idiot.(or a cheapskate!)I'd appreciate advice. Thanks

I don't think the labor is too high. There is a fair amount involved in the R&R of the steering box on either a 3 OR 4 cyl 2000. You should request a complete fluid change as well as a new filter. Won't amount to much more, and will complete the repair properly.

Anne: CT Farm and Country sells rebuilt manual steering assemblys for $443.99 or $349.99 exchange. Shipping costs would be to and from Des Moines. Costs for power steering units are around $200 higher. However, I believe that sometimes there are advantages to doing business locally and having the dealer/service people having "ownership" in your tractor. And it takes a fair wrench puller to get the assembly out and back in your 2000. Mik

Anne,

The numbers quoted are either high or low or just right, depending on what has to be done.

A suggestion. Post a description of what specifically happened to the steering. Did the power steering fail?... an oil seal fail?... steering lock & won't work at all? The more info. the better. My guess is that there is someone on the discussion board here who can give you some sound guidence on this.

Is this info any help? If not - thanks anyway. Anne

Anne,

Sounds like something broke loose in the power steering control in the steering box.

As for the cost, labor is always the most expensive part. A good mechanic ain't cheap. The cheap ones you don't want...

Question: Is the work being done by an established mechanic or dealer who has been around for a while? If so, you're probably in good hands.

When work is completed, you may want to find out from them what caused the problem in the first place and if there is anything you should watch for in the future concerning the steering. Ask them give you a written warranty for the work done... they'll probably give one for 30 or 60 days on materials & labor.

Hope all turns out OK.
