I have a 1949 8n. doesn't have much oil pressure. When engine warms up I only have around 10 lbs of pressure according to gauge. What is normal. Thanks.

I get around on half revs 40 on my major. Ur oil pump may be on the way out. When I idle it goes down to around 25.

BK,
You didn't say what type of oil you're using, if you're using a multi-weight you might want to try a good 30 wt straight weight oil. Your pressure doesn't sound too abnormal for a older engine. If you're not blowing a lot of smoke out the exhaust you could probably get away with putting new bearings in the lower end. If you go that route remember to pull the head and ream the ridge off the top of the cylinders, if you don't the new bearings might well push the rings into the ridge and fracture them.

You might be able to increase your oil pressure by removing the hex cap bolt on the right front bottom of the engine, that holds the oil pump relief spring in place, stretch the spring so it's about a third longer than it is now and that will put a little more pressure on the ball in the oil relief valve and will increase your oil pressure a bit.

These are tempoary fixes, the engine really should be rebuilt as soon as you get the opportunity. Good luck.

Mike

To piggyback off of what mike said:

Hold the phone Boudreaux! 10 pounds of earl pressure aint much. I'd be willing to be you have more than that. Your motor should be knockin if you drop tooooo o low. If you are pleased with the power....and you're not losing oil by the gallon (either by burning or leaking) then leave it alone. Betcha you are suffering from an inaccurate gauge, clogged up sending unit or just a tired ole tractor! My 8N reads about 20 pounds at wide open throttle and ZERO at idle. Now she's pretty much WSO (wore slap out) but I'll bet she's got more pressure than what the gauge says!

Thanks, I'll look into a gauge and the rest of what i've read before I get too carried away with the rebuild. Thanks for the info. BK
