801 carb problems?

I started mowing grass on Saturday. The tractor had been run on and off for short periods during the winter.

Anyway, I start mowing and everything is great and then 15 minutes or so into the mowing, the engine startes to die. I can work the throttle (up and down) and or apply choke and keep the enine running but I usually cannot keep mowing. The engine surges up and down when I start to mow again or drive for that matter. Sometime I can shut down for a few minutes and cut.

Anyway, I cleaned out the carb and reassembled but the same thing keeps happening.

The governor seems to be working. At least until the problem startes.

Any Ideas? Thanks for the help .. Bill

It is your coil. Coincidentally, I just saw same symptoms last night in a friend's car. Scavenged coil fixed problem for him, should fix it for you.

There is really no good way to check an intermittent coil problem like this. The resistance tests really don't show anything until the coil burns out. The best way to catch them that I have seen is with an electrical tach connected to the coil. A jumping tach = coil going bad. Doesn't help on a tractor with mechanical proofmeter but it is a good diagnostic tool.

The signs and symptoms you described are exactly like mine except for I was mowing on Monday with my 901.
I'll be trying some of these fixes and post what I find. Hope you'll do the same.

Good Luck!

When I was working on the tractor last weekend. I checked out the fuel lines pretty well. I removed the sediment bowl at the carb and opened the shut off at the gas tank. Good gas flow. Some accumlated crud in the glass bowl.

I also cleaned out the oil from the airfilter. It was overfull and looked like some water had accumumlated in it. I refilled to the proper level and reassembled.

The first time I attempted to clean out the carb, it looked ok on the inside but I did have to take it apart again. It flooded and fuel escaped through the carb over flow. It seemed ok the second time after I adjusted the carb float. It has a Zenith, instead of the original M/S carb.

Is there a way to check the coil without just replacing it?

It runs and cuts great until the problem occurs. No sign of problems until it happens.

Thanks again
Bill

I checked my fuel lines again and it seems I was drawing air where the sediment bowl bolts to the carb.
Don't know why it only happened after running for awhile. But, runs fine now and hope you've figured out yours.

David

I had a chance to work on it again this weekend.

Similar problem but I was able keep it going by adjusting the main jet. Mine seems to be getting too much gas (float issue?) Seems that partially closing the fuel shut off helps a bit also.

Thanks
Bill

I’ve had similar problems with my 860. I think that I’m having a fuel delivery problem. Check your lines real well. Also, route them away from heat sources to prevent vapor lock.

sounds like there's still a piece a dirt lodged in carb somewhere. Tear it apart, give it a bath in carb cleaner for awhile, then wash it and blow it out with comepressed air and reassemble again.

A bad coil will cause similar run problems: Starts okay when cold and runs for 15 or 30 minutes until hot, then starts running poorly and doesn't have any power.
