My tractor, a Ford 2000, no power steering, has become very hard to steer. You have to use all your might to turn the steering wheel just a little even while the tractor is rolling. Could someone let me know what I am up against to fix this and a brief overview of how to do it?
I read the posts and am ready to tackle this with a little more knowledge. Bern, Tony, and all, I need your help.

Aubrey, Is your steering sector leaking? It may be out of grease. What about the bushings in the steering arms and front spindle supports? I would start by checking bushings, I've heard that steering sector is not easy to rebuild. Goodluck John

I would jack the front end up off the ground and see if the wheels turn easy that way. Check and grease it with the weight off the tires. My fordson super major took about a hour of heating with a torch and greasing untill the one kingpin took grease. and then I worked it back and forth for a while while forcing grease in to the stuborn king pin.

Thanks for all your help. When I got the front
wheels off the ground and unbolted some steering
linkage to check the steering, it was obvious
what the problem was. The steering wheel would
turn lock to lock with no effort and one wheel
turned easily side to side. The other wheel
was the problem - it would not move hardly any
side to side(left to right and right to left).
I finally got it moving and with a combination
of heavy exertion with "cheater pipes" and continuous greasing, it finally began to move freely. Thanks again. Without your help, I
could not have got the steering fixed.
