The rear main on my 4cyl (60's) 4000 is LEAKING. I ordered the seal from napa it is a two piece design. Can I replace that without splitting the tractor? The repair manual is very vage on the entir subject.

No, a split is not necessary. If you got a 2 piece rope seal, I'd take it back and get the 2 piece lip seal, it's easier to install. Drop the oil pan, and remove the rear main cap, which also is the seal retainer. loosen the center main cap to allow the crankshaft to drop away from the top half of the seal. NAPA has a rope seal remover/installer kit that's worth the money just to help remove the old rope seal. I block up the front of the tractor 8"-10" (safely!) to give extra clearance. I can't give the main cap torque spec off the top of my head. It's an unpleasant but not too difficult job.
