Roland Jackson sent me a non-functioning Proofmeter from his 850(I think). The glass had been gone for a long time, it seems, and the needle was broken off. It took 4-hours of soaking with PB Blaster to get the old cable housing off. The inside was totally rusted away. I wanted to see if it was the same as the 8N/NAA. The meter was not nearly the quality of the 8N/NAA meter and is not as easily repairable. The parts are stamped steel instead of die-cast, and the magnet runs on the outside of the disc, instead of the inside. The thing is held together with rivets and burrs instead of screws. The odometer wheels are not bakelite but some kind of white plastic. This meter was toast with no salvageable parts, except the housing and bracket. I'll do comparison pictures in the AM and post them.

I think I have an SOS proofmeter somewhere. I changed it out to a 4-speed meter because the 4-speed proofmeter worked and the SOS didn't. I will look around for it. If I find it I will gladly donate it to the cause. I think I remember partially dismantling it just to see how it worked but I know I kept it because I figured one day I would try to fix it.

Bob, I am sorry that the proof meter from the 1801 Industrial Backhoe, I sent you, didn't help as much as we both had wished for. But, as I told you, it was "pretty used" and I was going to trash it away. Hopefully, you gained some information about it.

I think you have undertaken a great project. From time to time, I get proof meters that are not useable. I will keep you in mind and send them to you if you want.

Since you didn't gain any parts from the proof meter I sent, don't worry about reimbursing me the shipping charges. I will donate the shipping charges to your worthy "proof meter study" in hopes of finding out what make those little things tick! I will let you know when I get another one...and hopefully, it will be in better shape then the one I sent.
