There should be a formed-in line on the bottom (removable)cup that indicates the proper oil level. You can clean with a can of good old carb cleaner if they aren't absolutely clogged and hardened. Otherwise you need to de-crud the screen first then get the fine stuff out. Be patient, it will take a while to get it clean the first time, then with regular PM it is easy.

You have to fill it up enough so the center air inlet tube is below the oil level. That causes a vacuum which then causes the oil to migrate up into the screening. As far as cleaning, I assume you mean the screening, if it's not too bad, you can dip the whole works in solvent, or take it to a steam cleaner. Frankly, I did that but mine was so clogged, I had to take it apart and pull out the screening for cleaning. If it's an original piece of equipment, taking it apart is not easy. But, those oil bath filters do a great job, if they are maintained. My $.02

Tim, I hear they do a good job too... but my 4000 HD Insdustrial didn't come with the oil pan (cup). I have been unsuccesful in locating one. Do you know if there is some sort of retrofit kit out there to convert my 1962 or 63 over to a paper / cartridge type filter. I have the filter box, just not the pan. Diesel. Thanks for any help. Dave.

Don't know of any paper filter conversions. The only reason some people have had to convert to a paper filter is for easier winter starting. Why not try to get the oil cup ? Try Cross Creek Salvage for starters 18004627335 and then punch up the ATIS Salvage Yard List on the internet and go from there. Just a thought.
