3000 stopped running

Well my 66 3000 was running fine a week ago when I last moved it. Today I start it up and it begins running a little rough as I release the choke, but nothing out of the ordinary. Usually this clears up in a few seconds and everything is fine. This time it sputtered and died and would not restart for anything.

Finally I decided to check things-gas is flowing, battery is fully charged, electricity coming into and out of coil, but for some reason no spark at the plugs. Anyone have an idea as to why this is? I popped the distributor cap and cleaned up the rotor and other connections as well as visually inspecting the points, but didn't see anything noticably wrong. Before I run out and start buying random pieces, does anyone have a clue why it just stopped running and why I now have no spark coming out of the distributor?

Justin

Thanks for the responses guys. While manually seperating the points I initially got no spark. Went around searching for loose connections and really didn't find anything. Thought "this is strange" and decided to manually check the points again and this time they sparked! Put a new cap, rotor, and plugs in for good measure and it started right up.

Got to work all day around the homestead and didn't have any problems. I think I need a new wiring harness because a lot of these wires are dry rotted or frayed.

I put a new harness on my 1970 3000. They didn't make it easy. Be sure to ask for a gas set. There is a diesel set too.

Thanks for the heads-up on the gas vs diesel harness, I'll be sure to check up on that. Did you get yours locally or someplace online?

Here is my personal troubleshooting flow chart.

Pull coil high voltage wire from distributor cap and crank tractor. check for spark there while cranking.

If that has no spark then it is one of four things. Points, Condensor, Coil or wires between.

Pop the distributor and crank the tractor until the points are closed. Manually open them and see if you get a spark both at the coil wire and between the points as they close. If not then change the condensor. check and see if the points need cleaning. My personal favorite way of doing this is to take a nail file and place it between the points and sand them flat.

Somewhere in this is the answer. Don't give up

With cap and rotor removed crank tractor over until points are closed. Then take a small screwdriver and open points and see if you have spark across points. If not replace points and condensor. Check wire feeding points also.
