Our 72'4000 (SOS)weeps a little oil from the PTO handle.(on the dash under the kill knob). It only seems to weep when you are operasting the PTO. It is annoying because everytime you engage or disengage it you get an oily mit. Is it easy to fix or not worth worrying about? The manuals do not say much at all about why it would weep oil. Bye the way I reckon they are the best tractor transmission to use of them all. Better than hydrostatic as there is no slippage at all. In 30 years we have changed oil and filters on SOS and not a problem. Maybe I would think differently if it played up. Do all you guys drive automatic cars or manual shift and I rest my case.

Davey, Transmission should breath through a small loose-cap breather on the front slope of the transmission top cover, close to where the shift cable tubes attach. Loosen and clean the breather. There might be loose fitting or blown gasket that's spraying an excessvie amount of oil at the breather tube area, maybe someone has removed the breather and plugged the hole!

It's interesting to speculate on reliability of the Selectospeed, my opinion is that failures were 60 percent due to manufacturing quality, 30 percent due to maintenance and operation, 10 percent due engineering. (I'm a mechanic not an engineer)!. Ford built the Selectospeeds in the old Highland Park, MI Ford Plant which had been used to build model T's. Then they moved to a new plant at Romeo Michigan. With working conditions in Highland Park, a move and training new plant employees at Romeo, quality was a challenge. When they finally got it mostly right, the demand for Selectospeeds had died and production ended. Engines, gear transmissions and rear axles were manufactured in Europe and assembled in Michigan.

Manual pickup, don't like auto tranny. Wife needs the auto, went out at 17,000 hours on the car - under warrenty, but still, jeez - pickup has 112,000 on, going strong. Guess that proves those manuals are a lot better. :)

Seriously, SoS was a great idea, worked pretty well. Problem is people only sell them when they die. And with three times as many clutchs it takes more attention, and about 3 times as much money to repair.

Owning one that works is great. Owning a broken one is a money pit not worth it.

Probably how the wife feels about me, too.

Hay Dave not everybody here bad mouths the SOS and hopefully somebody will help ya out with your question but I've never owned or worked on one so I don't have an opinion or knowledge either way. However I've never owned a car much less an automatic either. Driving my 11th truck and all of them have been Standard's and all of them have been built in the USA! Bought my wife a Blazer with an auto transmission and she's still pissed! One more twist to the story if ya can stand it, all my trucks have been Chevy's or GMC and all my tractors FORD's. Good luck with the SOS it's served ya well as will most anything properly maintained..... ..... .. AB
